Last year we were recommended by a long term overseas client to help with some small interior alterations for a new client in Rutland Court, Knightsbridge. The property is a stunning split level penthouse apartment overlooking Hyde Park. Almost every property has one drawback and in this apartment it is the en suite bathroom to the Master Bedroom. The client wanted to ensure that the wonderful symmetrical floor plan of the master bedroom was retained, so our job was to change the en suite to create the illusion of more space without adding to the layout. We designed three main changes to the existing en suite and what a difference they made!
Knowing that we had many years’ experience in garden design the client then asked me whether I could help to tidy up the two balconies, one slightly narrower balcony on the top floor, and one very spacious balcony measuring over 9 metres by 3 metres on the floor below.
Most of the budget is going to the large balcony which is accessed from the main reception room and which will make a wonderful outdoor room to entertain guests on sunny days. In our design we introduced a central focal point built against the existing chimney stack, which both distracts the viewer from the chimney stack and provides space for a beautiful and useful oak bench flanked by evergreen scented climbers. Above the bench is an internally lit niche to house a sculpture, recreating the atmosphere of an outdoor reception room. On the opposite side we positioned a small circular dining table behind which we placed a row of planters. Two oblong planters flanking one central square planter. The central square planter is to be filled with large pebbles and an Oase water jet fountain will spout up from beneath the pebbles. The fountain will be lit from below and the soft sound of water will create the perfect ambience for an evening of al fresco dining.
